Yakgwa is a very traditional snack: Koreans used to eat this sweet during the harvest festival of Chuseok in September or October. Chuseok is one of the two most important festivals in Korea (alongside the New Year, which is celebrated in January or February each year). Among other things, Chuseok is a time to commemorate deceased relatives, and some families still symbolically serve yakgwa on a small altar for their loved ones. The taste of yakgwa therefore reminds many Koreans of family celebrations.
The name translates roughly as "medicinal confectionery". The reason for this is that yakgwa used to be made with a lot of honey and honey was considered medicine in ancient Korea.
Nowadays, this cake-like sweet is available all year round and not just in the fall. It is very sweet, which is why it is often enjoyed with tea.
